Chapter Eleven

“Mila wants to see you,” Theo said, tapping away on his monitor.

I had just arrived at work the day after the special committee meeting with plans to meet with Asher about doing research for Rhoan’s report.

“Did she say why?” I asked, walking to Theo’s desk.

Mila, Asher and I had a meeting scheduled for later in the afternoon. The only reason I could think that she would want to meet with me privately before that was to speak about any concerns she had over my brother’s presentation. But that didn’t seem right. By this point, Mila was more than familiar with Rhoan’s strident opinions.

Theo glanced up at me. “Unfortunately,” he said with a drawl, “though I’m a senator, I’m not privy to such information.”

I frowned, still deep in thought as I walked to Mila’s office. The previous name etched on the minister’s door had been removed and were replaced by the words Office of Mila Interim Minister of Prospect Eight. The change had been done so quickly and inconspicuously that if I hadn’t worked for Gabriel, I would have had a hard time believing he had ever worked at the Judiciary.

I tapped on the panel at the side of her door. When it slid open, I peeked inside. “Mila?”

“Come in,” she said from her seat behind the desk. Her head was down, eyes focused on her monitor as she sipped a drink. The scent of hurim filled the room. She pointed at the chair to her left, not taking her eyes off of her screen.

I sat down then watched as Mila’s dark brown eyes slid across the screen, reading whatever it was that was displayed there. She appeared to be in no hurry to speak, so I plaited my fingers in my lap and glanced around. The office was just as Gabriel had left it. In fact, there was nothing that reflected Mila’s personal life or tastes within the space. It was clear that Mila was under no illusion that she would be here very long.

I cleared my throat. “How are plans coming along to elect our new minister?” I asked.

Mila scowled at her monitor. “Too fucking slow,” she said, finally looking at me. “I’m trying to hold two worlds together during a time of unprecedented unrest, yet Prospect Council appears to be in no rush to get things started.”

I frowned. “Do you at least know who’s in the running?”

Mila set her mug on the desk. “There are two senators who are strong candidates so far: the designate ministers from Dignitas Two and Hale Six.”

I gaped at her. “Hale Six?”

Mila nodded. “Petra Minister.”

I slumped in my seat. If there truly were gods, then they were surely enjoying a good laugh right now.

Mila looked me over and cocked her head. “Do you know her?”

I glanced away. “Only in passing,” I mumbled, reflecting on the chance meeting between me and Gannon’s old flame. I quickly plotted out paths to transfer to another world should she become Prospect Eight’s minister and, gods forbid, my superior.
